Do You Prepare for a Residency Interview?

Often, when faced with a problem, applicants ask the obvious question, but sometimes not the best question. The better question to ask is: What can I do between now and my interview so the site will rank me as high as possible? Once you look at the interview as an event where you can score points for certain actions (and lose them) then you recognize where you can improve. Yes, it's true, you have to "fit" with the site, but the site, in most cases, has only chosen those applicants who they believe already fit. This course is about understanding the points system that sites use to evaluate their candidates. Sure, you want to be memorable, but when they go back to committee after those interviews, the first thing the committee does is add up the points.

You especially need a great interview if you have some factors stacked against you like a poor college interview match rate or a specific geographic area you need to apply in.

Welcome to the ROCK-STAR Interview Prep Course

While you may have heard of the STAR method for answering behavioral interview questions by answering with the situation, task, action, and result, there is another type of question that you need to answer fully, the ROCK questions. ROCK questions are those that are foundational, just as setting a house's foundation on a rock like What are your Strengths? What are your Weaknesses? and so forth. However, to best articulate those answers, you have to answer the question in such a way that best organizes it so the interviewer can write down the high points and remember it. When answering questions fully, a great ROCK answer will set the stage and adding great STAR questions will demonstrate you are truly a star candidate. Yes, I get it's a little cliché or glib, but you'll hear all the time, they were a solid candidate but . . . they just didn't have that star quality. After this course, you'll learn how to articulate that you are a solid candidate AND have those star behavioral question answers that will allow them to rank you at the top of their list. The penalty for not matching in your graduation year is severe - a 50 percent decrease in your odds, so you want to do your very best in your graduating year.

… let's get to work.

Here are some testimonials from my LOI course, but also include the advice I passed on in our emails back and forth to help once they entered the interview stage.

Hello, I just wanted to update you that I matched! I applied to 7 places, interviewed at 4 and matched with my #1! I'm beyond excited and grateful to you for your help in this process. The LOI was a stressful part of this process and you helped to make it less stressful for me. I hope all is well with you!

Your support means a lot to me. You have helped me more than you know and I believe I am not the only student that feels that way. Most importantly, thank you for believing in me. It has been hard for me to be a first-generation college student with immigrant parents. I have had many firsts, and applying to a pharmacy residency program was no different. Thank you for helping students like me and making the process a bit more bearable. I honestly no way thought I would match the slightest.

I wanted to let you know that I matched my first choice! Thank you so much for all of the help throughout this process!
I also wanted to thank you again for the help with LOIs. So far I have been 2/2 for being invited to onsite interviews on the sites I have heard back on, and I'm sure my impressive letters had a large part in obtaining those!

I know you are probably getting 1000s of emails today, but I wanted to share that I matched with my #1 choice! I will be at . . . I really appreciate your help in writing my letters of intent. I honestly don't think I would have been as successful if I didn't have a great editor such as you! Also, all of your podcasts, blog posts, and books have really helped me prepare for the residency quest. Thank you again for all of your advice and support. I look forward to staying in touch on LinkedIn in the future!

After the experience of not matching last year, I am pleased to receive the letter that I matched for a residency this Friday. I would like extend my sincere thank you to you for helping me on my letters of intent. Thank you for going the extra miles to help me as well as other candidates. I would love to reach out to you again in December as I am planning to continue with my pursuit in PGY2.
Just wanted to let you know I matched at . . . focused PGY1 in . . . Thank you so much for your help in writing my letter of intent. I hope things are going well for you, and I will certainly be an advocate for you and your resources as I precept students along the way.
Looks like I'll be heading to . . . next year to complete a PGY1 at . . . ! Thank you for all of your help these past few months. Your help with my LOI really helped to push my application to the next level. I can't wait to see what happens next!

I just wanted to update you to let you know I have interviews and am thankful for your help!

Your edited version is absolutely fantastic. You were able to keep my voice present. You were also able to include all of my interests/past experiences in a naturally flowing dialogue.

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for helping me write my letters of intent. You were a great resource and your suggestions were extremely helpful. The letters must have been great because I received an interview with all 3 programs I applied to! How exciting!
Thank you for all of your editing and help on my Letters of Intent. I am pleased to let you know that I have received several interview offers. The content you provide in your books and podcasts has been extremely beneficial especially these last few months. I am on the APhA-ASP email list and when I saw the opportunity to get your book I was so excited. I read the entire book today and thought it was great! Thank you again for everything!
I just got lost in the residency madness for a bit. I first wanted to thank you for your edits. They really helped me create a strong LOI and I have received interviews from some of my top places. I cannot thank you enough for that. I also am looking forward to joining your email list. I’m still listening to your podcasts, and cannot express how much I appreciate you providing amazing advice for pharmacy students.

Thank you again for your help with my letter of intent. I received an interview from . . . Be ready to receive a ton of requests next year for LOI reviews.

Thank you so much for the time and the effort you spent for helping me with letters of intent. The letter of intent was especially challenging to me since English is not my first language. I could not have gone through residency applications with a peaceful mind without you and your expertise. As the year 2020 is here, may the new year bring you happiness, health, and wealth.
