What makes a CV or Resume stand out?
How do you stand out in a competitive job market and make your resume stand from hundreds of applicants? Hiring supervisors have very little time to look at a CV or resume. That means, like a newspaper or blog article, the most important part must come first.
In a quick glance, I can see whether you are planning on working towards a leadership position or that you have or don’t have the experience I need. If I can’t do that in a glance, I move on because it is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure their qualifications match to my position not the other way around.
While you can send a CV/resume out to many people quickly, what you want to do is really take the time to customize it and make it clear that your qualifications match the job posting. A resume is not a static document, it changes with the job you are looking for and hoping to earn.
Correct Grammar and Syntax are not Optional
If someone makes errors in a document they present as a reflection of themselves, then the company can only think they are careless or will not ask for help. You don’t have to be an English major, there are plenty of people who love to “fix” a CV and resume for grammar and syntax and I am one of them. If a hiring manager is using their phone, it’s even more important they don’t swipe away from your document and an error signals a quick swipe and an opportunity to move on.
Making Sure to Use the Right Keywords
I also make sure the keywords from original job posting as those are the qualities that the company is looking for right now. While a job is not a residency, there still needs to be a match between the skills you have and the needs of the company. One way companies can sift through a pile quickly is to focus on keywords before actually even reading the resume or CV.
There is a lot to focus on in a CV and Resume, but if you check off all the boxes, you can get to an interview a lot quicker.
… let's get to work.
Testimonials
Your support means a lot to me. You have helped me more than you know and I believe I am not the only student that feels that way. Most importantly, thank you for believing in me. It has been hard for me to be a first-generation college student with immigrant parents. I have had many firsts, and applying to a pharmacy residency program was no different. Thank you for helping students like me and making the process a bit more bearable. I honestly no way thought I would match the slightest.
I know you are probably getting 1000s of emails today, but I wanted to share that I matched with my #1 choice! I will be at . . . I really appreciate your help in writing my letters of intent. I honestly don't think I would have been as successful if I didn't have a great editor such as you! Also, all of your podcasts, blog posts, and books have really helped me prepare for the residency quest. Thank you again for all of your advice and support. I look forward to staying in touch on LinkedIn in the future!
I just wanted to update you to let you know I have interviews and am thankful for your help!
Your edited version is absolutely fantastic. You were able to keep my voice present. You were also able to include all of my interests/past experiences in a naturally flowing dialogue.
Thank you again for your help with my letter of intent. I received an interview from . . . Be ready to receive a ton of requests next year for LOI reviews.
